The crop millet include species in
several general kinds. The most widely cultivated species in order of worldwide
production are:
Known as Pearl Millet, that is Bajra, and as Kambu in
Tamil.
Known as Foxtail Millet, Thinai in
Tamil.
Common Millet, broom corn millet,
hog millet or white millet.
Also known as Ragi or Mandwa, and as
Kezhvaragu in Tamil
This term is applied to a variety of small seeds
originally cultivated by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans and part of
the human diet in China, Japan, and India.
In Western countries millet pearl seeds are used
mainly for birdseed. The genus is termed Panicum. The small seed is normally
about two mili-meter long and nearly two mili-meter broad. The term pearl
millet is one of its several alternative names. Japanese barnyard millet is a
well-known variety.
It has been an alternative of wheat for the rural
Indian population and is quite rich in vitamins and minerals helpful for the
growth of human body.
