ISLAM-HOLY PLACES. MECCA.MADINA.

Holy Places-Mecca-Madina.

Mecca is the capital city of Saudi Arabia's Makkah province, in the historic Hejaz region.

It has a population of 20 lakh. The city is located, 45 miles inland from Jeddah, in the narrow sandy Valley of Abraham, It is 909 feet above sea level. It is located 50 miles from the Red Sea.

The city is revered as the holiest site of Islam, and a pilgrimage to it is required of all able-bodied Muslims who can afford to go, at least once in their lifetime. Muslims regard the al-Masjid al-Haram  as the holiest place on Earth.

The term 'Mecca' has come into common usage metaphorically to mean any all-important site for any particular group of people, or a main attraction in a certain place or group of people that has a large turnout. In the 1980s the government  changed the official English transliteration of the city's name from 'Mecca', as it had been and continues to be commonly spelled as 'Makkah'.

Medina or Madina is a city in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia.

It currently has a population of  20 lakh, 270 miles north of Mecca.

Madina was originally known as Yathrib, but later the city's name was changed to Madīna al-Nabī "city of the prophet") or Al Madīnah al Munawwarah ("the enlightened city" or "the radiant city"), while the short form Madina simply means "city". Madina is the second holiest city of Islam, after Mecca (Makkah).

Both Mecca and Madina are in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh is the capital city of Saudi Arabia, and Mecca is the capital city of its Makkah province. Medina is a city in western Saudi Arabia. It lies on a fertile plain about 270 miles north of Mecca.

Medina and Mecca are the holiest cities in Islam, the Muslim Religion, and only Muslims may enter there. The Holy Mosque of the Prophet Muhammad, who founded the religion known as Islam, is in Medina. This Muslim house of worship holds Muhammad's tomb. Islam requires every Muslim to make at least one pilgrimage to Mecca if he or she can do so. Most pilgrims who visit Mecca also go to Medina. No one knows when Medina was founded. It was originally called "Yathrib," and the farmers settled there before 200 BC.
