The most sacred rivers of India are Ganga Yamuna Godavari Sarswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri, a dip in any of these rivers washes ones sins away..
The dams on Narmada river benefits Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan that include provision for drinking water, power generation and irrigation facilities.
The Narmada, rises in the Maikala Range the Narmada Kund on the
Amarkantaka hill in the Annupur district in east Madhya Pradesh.
The Narmada River
runs 11 miles south-southwest of Jabalpur after forming the Dhuandhar
waterfall, the river passes through the famous Marble Rocks, which are an
attraction to the tourists.
Following a
tortuous course through the hills of Mandla, it enters the structural trough
between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges at Marble Rocks Gorge and then flows
westward across Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, entering the Gulf of Cambay through
an estuary 13 miles wide, just below Bharuch. Along its 800-mile course, the
Narmada drains the northern slopes of the Satpura Range. Called Namade by the
2nd-century-ad Greek geographer Ptolemy, the river has always been an important
route between the Arabian Sea and the Ganges River valley. Holy scriptures
describe it sprang from the body of the god Shiva, and the Narmada ranks only
after the Ganges in sanctity. The pradaksina pilgrimage takes pilgrims from
Bharuch to Amarkantak hill, up one bank of the river and down the other.
