There are many thin, underfed people about, but no one is starving. Even more remarkable is the fact that human conduct in Kolkata despite its cracks and difficulties, has not degenerated. It is a big cultural center of the country. Bengali poets dramatists, dancers have surpassed everyone in their creativity. Crime in Kolkata is minimum in comparison to other cities. The street sleepers do not cause trouble. They save every rupee to send their family in the villages. An enormous sense of responsibility guides the lives of these poor people and gives Kolkata a soul that other cities might envy.

Parliament has turned more or less an expensive big house, where more or less it is a resting place of idlers. Country expects everyone to do his duty. If this dictum is followed, Country will be at the TOP. Each country has not asserted itself as a world country in International matters. Diplomats have failed to project India as a super power player in the 21st century. At the back of everything, there is lack of diplomacy and farsightedness in each issue. Our media and lobby activity is very poor in international media and lobby. We lack drive and force to project country’s issue. We are meek and mild and docile and submissive. We have to be aggressive and initiating in the cause of issues relating to our interest. A policy of compromise and submissiveness is seen at each issue. Every year, every term, new faces are inducted in the ministry. None can do the magic. The present set of machinery, rules, regulations and principles of justice come in the way of fast track course of action required to be adopted in important matters. Our very existence is at a threat, as A Nation. There were incumbents before them on the same post. They were better. That is the quality of the present lot. There is nothing like moral and immoral in issues at international level. There is nothing ethics and non-ethics in issues relating to the security and solidarity of the country. There are three kinds of lies. Lies. Damn lies and statistics. Statistics are generally used to lie to the public. Damn lies are used to keep the lower rank and file in order. With a plate of coarse rice for eats, With a jug of water for drinks, And my bent arms as pillows, I have joy in the midst of sorrows. “What is time for supper?” For Anil, whenever he chooses. For Arun, whenever he can. Poverty has kept more homes together, than divided. Wealth has divided more houses than kept together. Their houses are new, prejudices are old. They build new house with lot of money But they do not live in it worthy way. One half of the nation is ill-housed. One half of our people are ill-clad. One half of our people are ill-nourished. So little done, so much to do ! What crimes are committed in the name of progress ? What money is collected in the name of religion? What scams are operated in the name of prosperity ? Oh ! my country, when and where will all this end?

BY THE EXPERIENCE OF DEATH, THE EXPERIENCE OF FORMER LIFE IS REALIZED. THIS IS AFFLICTION OF LOVE OF LIFE, WHICH FLOWS BY ITS OWN POTENCY. CONJUNCTION IS THAT WHICH BRINGS ABOUT RECOGNITION OF NATURE OF POWER OF OWNING AND CAPACITY OF BEING OWNED, THE KNOWLEDGE IS REALIZED. THE SIDDHAS, THE GODS, THE RISHIS BECOME VISIBLE TO HIM WHO FOLLOWS ABOVE GUIDELINES.

SIKH GURU NANAKji.

Guru Nanak.(1469-1539) Guru Nanak was born in village Talvandi, Lahore. At an age of 35 he had visionary experience in which he heard a voice Ordering him to preach God’s name, serve him with prayer and Spread teachings of true faith. 10th November 2017 is calculated to be the 549th birth-anniversary of Guru Nanak. Let no man in the world live in delusion. Without a Guru none can cross over to the other shore. The Guru is the Word, For all nectar is enshrined in this word. Blessed is the word which reveal the Lord's name But more is the one who knows it by the Guru's grace. Whoever, styling himself as a teacher lives on others, never bow before him. He who earns his livelihood by the sweat of Hasbro and shares it with others. O Nanak only he can know the way. God is one, but he has innumerable forms. He is the creator of all and He himself takes the human form. One cannot comprehend Him through reason, even if one reasoned for ages. The lord can never be established nor created; the formless one is limitlessly complete in Himself. The word is the Guru, The Guru is the Word, For all nectar is enshrined in the word. Blessed is the word which reveal the Lord's name But more is the one who knows it by the Guru's grace. He who shows the real home in this body is the Guru. He makes the five sounded word reverberate in man. Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot be compared with an ant filled with the love of God. As fragrance abides in the flower As reflection is within the mirror, So does your Lord abide within you, Why search for him without ? His teachings, expressed through devotional hymns, many of which still survive, stressed salvation from rebirth through meditation on the divine name. Among modern Sikhs he enjoys a particular affection as their founder and as the supreme master of Punjabi devotional hymn. What little information there is about Nanak's life has been handed down mainly through legend and tradition. There is no doubt that he was born in 1469 in the village of Rai Bhoi di Talvandi. His father was a member of a sub-caste of the mercantile Khatri caste. The relatively high social rank of the Khatris distinguishes Nanak from other religious reformers of the period and may have helped promote the initial growth of his following. He married the daughter of a Khatri, who bore him two sons. For several years Nanak worked in a granary until his religious vocation drew him away from both family and employment, and, in the tradition of Indian religious mendicants, he embarked on a lengthy journey, probably traveling to the Muslim and Hindu religious centers, and perhaps even to places beyond India's borders. Neither the actual route nor the places he visited can be positively identified. References found in four of his hymns suggest that Nanak was present at attacks Babur launched on Saidpur and Lahore, so it seems safe to conclude that by 1520 he had returned from his travels and was living in the Punjab. The remaining years of his life were spent in Kartarpur. In view of the size of the followers that Nanak attracted, numerous anecdotes concerning the deeds of the Guru began to circulate within the community soon after his death. Many of these were borrowed from the current Hindu and Muslim traditions, and others were suggested by Nanak's own works. These anecdotes were called sakhis, and the anthologies into which they were gathered in rough chronological order are known as Janam-sakhis. The interest of the narrators and compilers of the Janam-sakhis has largely concentrated on the childhood of Nanak and above all on his travels. Among the earlier traditions are tales of visits he is supposed to have made to Baghdad and Mecca. Ceylon is a later addition, and later still the Guru is said to have traveled as far east as China and as far west as Rome. Today the Janam-sakhis offer a substantial material, and the more important of these collections continue to be the basis of biography of Nanak.

RISHI SAGE PARSURAM

Dynasty of Lord Parasurama. In the dynasty of the Ailas was a great king named Gadhi. His daughter Satyavati was chaste and beautiful. The king was approached by sage Ruchika for the hand of his daughter. King Gadhi did want to refuse a Brahman, but at the same time did not consider him a fit match for his daughter. So he fixed a dowry for his daughter, of at least one thousand horses, brilliant as the sunshine, with one ear black and the other white. The great sage understanding the mind of the king, procured this from Varuna, the demi-god of the ocean, and thus was married to Satyavati. Soon Satyavati and her mother both approached sage Ruchika and requested him to perform a yajna so that they could have a son. The great sage performed the yajna and prepared two oblations, one for his wife, Satyavati and one for her mother. Since he was a Brahman, he instructed his wife to eat the oblation prepared to induce Brahmanical qualities in the child. The oblation for the mother-in-law was prepared with Ksatriya mantra since she belonged to the ruling class. The mother of Satyavati thinking that the oblation for her daughter was superior to her, requested it from her daughter and ate it, while Satyavati ate the oblation prepared for her mother. When the great sage Ruchika found out about this, he first declared that while Satyavati would have a fierce son on Ksatriya qualities, her mother would have a learned son of Brahmanical qualities. However, appeased by his remorseful wife, he later decreed that while Satyavati would have a Brahmanical son, the son of this son would be a fierce warrior. Thus was set the stage for the appearance of Lord Parasurama. In accordance with the decree of sage Ruchika, Satyavati had Jamadagni as a son, who was a gentle pious Brahman. The mother of Satyavati, the wife of King Gadhi had a son, who though born in a ksatriya family would later become a great Brahman rishi called Vishwamitra. The chaste Satyavati later became the sacred river Kausika, to purify the entire world. Her son Jamadagni married Renuka, the daughter of Renu. He had several sons headed by Vasuman. The youngest of his son was called Rama. Because of his fondness of parusa (metal chopper) as a weapon he was later called Parasurama. Parsuram is the sixth Incarnation of lord Vishnu, belongs to the Tretayug, and is the son of Jamadagni and Renuka. He received an axe after undertaking a terrible penance to please Lord Shiva, from whom He learned the methods of warfare and other skills. Dharani is his wife an incarnation of Goddess Laxmi. King Kartavirya Sahastr-arjuna, took away the holy cow Surbhi forcibly, and the King's sons killed Jamadagni in Parshuram's absence. Furious at their unrighteous act, He killed all sons of the King and also went on killing all corrupt Haihaya Kings and warriors on the earth 21 times. He then conducted the Ashvamedha sacrifice, done only by sovereign Kings and gave the entire land He owned to priests who performed the sacrifice. He is Immortal who stopped the advancing ocean back, thus saving the lands of Maharashtra - Karnataka - Kerala coastline and it is known as Parsuram Kshetra. He has been a Guru to Bhishma, Dronacharya and later also to Karna. He taught Karna the extremely powerful Brahmastra. But He also cursed that the knowledge would be useless to Karna, predicting much in advance that Karna will join the unrighteous Duryodhana in the Kurukshetra war. Such was His love for Righteousness. Parshuram is a martial Shraman ascetic. However, unlike all other Incarnations, Parshuram lives on earth even today. The Kalki Purana states Parshuram will be the martial guru of Sri Kalki, the 10th and final Incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is He who instructs Kalki to perform a long penance unto Shiva to receive celestial weaponry. He created a temple of worship right after He resurfaced Kerala from the sea. He placed statues of various Deities in 108 different places and introduced martial arts to protect the temple from the evil. There is a major festival known as Parshuram Jayanti that celebrates this deity. The festival takes place during April of the Western calendar, or on the third day of the bright half of the Hindu month Vaishakh. There is a giant parade and the festivities are hosted by the Brahmins resident in Jammu city. One story that relates to this avatar involves the anger of his father Jamadagni. Based on his rage, he asked Parshuram to slay his wife Renuka, Parshuram's mother. In obedience and devotion to his father, this deed was done. However, when offered a reward for his obedience, he requested his mother be given back her life. From this story comes the recognition of this avatar with parental devotion. Another tale tells of Kartavirya Sahashrarjun, who was a kshatrya (warrior king), murdering Parshuram's father. Due to this deed, Parshuram made a vow to obliterate all warrior kings. However, in fear the kshatrya fled the district until being urged back on the grounds that Parshuram must depart. He was then exiled to the mountain Mahendra because of his misconduct. A third story tells of Parshuram's intention to visit Shiva. Apparently he was stopped by Ganesha. Parshuram responded by hurling his axe at Ganesha, who allowed it to sever a tusk as the axe had been gifted by Shiva. He knew most of the vidyas by the age of eight and was able to converse with animals. Although there are numerous references and stories pertaining to Parshuram, his main purpose was reportedly to rid the planet of wrongness, especially formed by powerful kings who mistreated their status.

The mention of Pushpak Aeroplane, Brahmastra missile and fire-bomb Sanjaya showing the war-zone to Dhritrashtra on line live telecast was unknown to the world. Kautilya’s economic principles, political agenda by Chanakya was a gift to the world. Vedas were written on metal sheets and engraved on stones to reach the message to the people And religious books were narrated on papires. The concept of open-university education was in existence by Maharshis and Rishies imparting Education in physical fitness and use of weapons and study of puranas and religion. It taught the world how to grow food in agriculture and how to eat it to the best of its use and taste. It offered the world the taste of eating by use of spices, cloves cardamom salt and other spices. It invented the round wheels of the cart enabling to make moving carts and chariots for easy transport. It made boats and ships and cargo-plains of wood for sea-transport of goods to the world. Sanskrit was the universal language for communication with other world countries. From it All other languages have sprouted. India was a highly civilized and prosperous continent spreading almost more than half of Asia. The Sandal wood was in great demand from Egypt and other countries to preserve the mummy. Columbus and many others spent their life to find India. Instead he found America. JC Bose proved that plants and trees have life. Invention of the radio was done by an Indian but politics and dirty games made it for Marconi. India recently released 10 satellites in the orbit and created a record. HE THE FIRST ORIGIN THE CREATION, WHETHER HE CREATED IT ALL OR DID NOT CREATE THEM ALL. WHO KNOWS ? “BUT HE VERILY KNOWS WHOSE EYES CONTROL THIS WORLD FROM THE HIGHEST HEAVEN, OR PERHAPS HE EVEN KNOWS NOT.

SOCRATESE SPENT ALL HIS TIME IN WANDERING IN MARKET PLACES, GYMNASIA, PUBLIC PLACES LECTURING ABOUT HUMAN GOOD. WE HAVE FORGOTTEN GOD. WE HAVE INVOLVED OURSELVES IN WORLDLY PLEASURES. HE LIVED IN UTTER POVERTY. ALL WINTERS AROUND HE WORE ONE AND HIS ONLY ONE WINTER COAT TO PROTECT HIMSELF FROM SEVERE COLD. HE WORE NO SHIRT. HE WORE NO SHOES. HE PROFESSED THAT FOOLISH IMMORAL TALES ABOUT GOD WERE CIRCULATED BY GREEDY MONKS,PRIESTS TO MAKE THEIR LIVLIHOOD. HE BELIEVED IN THE IMMORTALITY OF THE SOUL. HE WAS CHARGED FOR OFFENCE OF CORRUPTING THE MINDS OF THE YOUTH. HE WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH BY OFFERING A CUP OF POISON TO DRINK.

SANYASEE- THE HINDU MONK.

THEY ARE RECOGNIZED AND HAVE THEIR SAY IN THE COUNTRY EVEN TODAY. THE 10 ORDERS ARE ARANYA, ASHRAMA, BHARATI, GIRI, PARVATA, PURI, SARASVATI, SAGARA, TIRTHA, AND VANA. EACH ORDER IS ATTACHED TO ONE OF FOUR MATHAS, ALSO ESTABLISHED BY SHANKARA, IN THE NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, AND WEST. THE FACT THAT TWO MEN GIVE THE SAME NAME TO THEIR EXPERIENCES IS NO GUARANTEE OF IDENTITY. THUS, THE ONLY ADMISSIBLE OBJECTIVE OF ACTION IS TO ENSURE THAT ONE'S OWN AFFECTIONS ARE PLEASANT. THE THREE POSSIBLE CONDITIONS OF THE HUMAN CONSTITUTION ARE VIOLENT CHANGE, GENTLE CHANGE, AND STABILITY. THE FIRST IS ACCOMPANIED BY PAIN, THE SECOND BY PLEASURE, THE LAST BY NEITHER. MAN MUST AVOID THE FIRST AND SEEK THE SECOND; IT IS A MISTAKE TO SUPPOSE THAT THE THIRD IS PLEASANT OR DESIRABLE. MOREOVER, THE PLEASURE TO BE SOUGHT IS THAT OF THE MOMENT; ONLY PRESENT EXPERIENCE CAN GIVE PRESENT PLEASURE. HAPPINESS, THE SUM OF PLEASURES, IS TO BE VALUED BECAUSE IT INCLUDES MOMENTARY PLEASURES, WHICH ARE LIKE IN KIND, THEIR RELATIVE VALUE DEPENDING ONLY ON THEIR INTENSITY. BODILY PLEASURES (AND PAINS) ARE MORE INTENSE THAN THOSE OF THE MIND. NEVERTHELESS, THE LATTER WERE RECOGNIZED AND EVEN HELD TO INCLUDE SOME THAT HAVE AN ALTRUISTIC ASPECT; E.G., JOY IN THE PROSPERITY OF ONE'S COUNTRY. TO BE STRONGER THAN PLEASURE IS A TRUE SOCRATIC IDEAL AND DISTINGUISHES THE CYRENAIC FROM THE WASTREL.THREE CYRENAICS MADE INNOVATIONS IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO GIVE THEIR NAMES TO FOLLOWERS. HEGESIAS, LIKE THEODORUS, DOUBTED THE POWER OF REASON TO PROCURE PLEASURES AND SO ADVISED AVOIDANCE OF PAIN; MUCH PAIN OF MIND COULD BE AVOIDED BY REGARDING SUCH THINGS AS POVERTY AND RICHES, SLAVERY AND FREEDOM, DEATH AND LIFE AS MATTERS OF INDIFFERENCE. FINALLY, ANNICERIS REVIVED THE ORIGINAL DOCTRINES WITH SOME ADDITIONS.THE ETHICAL DOCTRINES OF THE LATER CYRENAICS WERE, IN DUE TIME, INCORPORATED BODILY INTO THE TEACHINGS OF EPICURUS, FOUNDER OF A LATER SCHOOL OF ETHICAL PHILOSOPHY.

CHANDRESEKHAR SUBRAHMANYAM. (1910-1995). INDIAN-BORN AMERICAN ASTROPHYSICIST WHO, WITH WILLIAM A. FOWLER, WON THE 1983 NOBEL PRIZE FOR PHYSICS FOR FORMULATING THE CURRENTLY ACCEPTED THEORY ON THE LATER EVOLUTIONARY STAGES OF MASSIVE STARS. CHANDRASEKHAR WAS THE NEPHEW OF SIR CHANDRASEKHARA VENKATA RAMAN, WHO WON THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR PHYSICS IN 1930. CHANDRASEKHAR WAS EDUCATED AT PRESIDENCY COLLEGE, AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS, AND AT TRINITY COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE. FROM 1933 TO 1937 HE HELD A POSITION AT TRINITY.BY THE EARLY 1930S, SCIENTISTS HAD CONCLUDED THAT, AFTER CONVERTING ALL OF THEIR HYDROGEN TO HELIUM, STARS LOSE ENERGY AND CONTRACT UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THEIR OWN GRAVITY. THESE STARS, KNOWN AS WHITE DWARF STARS, CONTRACT TO ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE EARTH, AND THE ELECTRONS AND NUCLEI OF THEIR CONSTITUENT ATOMS ARE COMPRESSED TO A STATE OF EXTREMELY HIGH DENSITY. CHANDRASEKHAR DETERMINED WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE CHANDRASEKHAR LIMIT--THAT A STAR HAVING A MASS MORE THAN 1.44 TIMES THAT OF THE SUN DOES NOT FORM A WHITE DWARF BUT INSTEAD CONTINUES TO COLLAPSE, BLOWS OFF ITS GASEOUS ENVELOPE IN A SUPERNOVA EXPLOSION, AND BECOMES A NEUTRON STAR. AN EVEN MORE MASSIVE STAR CONTINUES TO COLLAPSE AND BECOMES A BLACK HOLE. THESE CALCULATIONS CONTRIBUTED TO THE EVENTUAL UNDERSTANDING OF SUPERNOVAS, NEUTRON STARS, AND BLACK HOLES.CHANDRASEKHAR JOINED THE STAFF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, RISING FROM ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ASTROPHYSICS (1938) TO MORTON D. HULL DISTINGUISHED SERVICE PROFESSOR OF ASTROPHYSICS (1952), AND BECAME A U.S. CITIZEN IN 1953. HE DID IMPORTANT WORK ON ENERGY TRANSFER BY RADIATION IN STELLAR ATMOSPHERES AND CONVECTION ON THE SOLAR SURFACE. HE ALSO ATTEMPTED TO DEVELOP THE MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF BLACK HOLES, DESCRIBING HIS WORK IN THE MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF BLACK HOLES (1983).CHANDRASEKHAR WAS AWARDED THE GOLD MEDAL OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY IN 1953 AND THE ROYAL MEDAL OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY IN 1962. HIS OTHER BOOKS INCLUDE AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF STELLAR STRUCTURE (1939), PRINCIPLES OF STELLAR DYNAMICS (1942), RADIATIVE TRANSFER (1950), HYDRODYNAMIC AND HYDROMAGNETIC STABILITY (1961), AND TRUTH AND BEAUTY: AESTHETICS AND MOTIVATIONS IN SCIENCE (1987).

THE SON OF INDIA--- GENERAL MANEKSHAW.

Today is the 103 Birth Anniversary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Lest we forget this Great Brave Son of India. Born on 3 April 1914 into the Manekshaw family at Amritsar Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, India's first Field Marshal, has 3 brothers and 2 sisters. At Amritsar, Dr. Hormusji started a medical practice and a chemist shop/pharmacy, where his prescriptions were formulated, so that his patients could have easier access to medication especially when pre formulated patented drug formulations were few and far between! With all their children born in Amritsar, Fali, the eldest, had his schooling in Bombay while the other boys Jan, Sam and Jemi went to school at "Sherwood College" at Nainital. The two sisters went to school at Murree now in Pakistan. All the Manekshaw children imbibed a very strong sense of humor. He was commissioned into the Indian Army as a Second Lieutenant in "The Frontier Force Regiment" on 4th February 1934. It was in 1937, that he met his future wife, Silloo Bode at a social gathering in Lahore where she was visiting her sister and brother-in-law, a Colonel in the Army Medical Corps. It was "Love at first sight" and they were married on 22nd April 1939. Silloo had her education at Bombay from where she graduated from "Elphinstan College" and later from the "JJ School of Arts" there. An insatiable reader and a talented painter, she had a multi faceted personality with a great grooming and equally great talent. A very intelligent and a well informed person, her greatest quality was her incisive mind and a very earthly approach to problems. A gracious mother and an affectionate wife, she always gave the right advice to her husband and family without hesitation. She was the anchor that kept the family's feet firmly on the ground. She always had time for her husband's staff officers, knew their wives and families and their problems. The only time she was ever seen to exercise 'rank' was when she was collecting for a charity or getting something done for someone who otherwise, would have had to wait or do without. Silloo gave birth to her first daughter Sherry on 11 January 1940, while the second girl whom they called Maya was born on 24 September 1945. Sherry joined the "Travel Trade" beginning with Air India and working with Mercury Travels for a long time, in fact she retired from there! She married Dinky Batliwala who was working with "Swiss Air". The Batliwalas who now live in Chennai, have one daughter named Brandy who lives abroad. Maya the younger one became a stewardess with the then "British Overseas Airways Corporation" (BOAC) now called British Airways. It was while flying for them that she met her husband Dhun Daruwala who was an Engineer with "Air India." The Daruwalas have two sons Rahul Sam and Jehan Sam. Maya did her degree in Law from London University and went on to become a Barrister from "Lincolns". She is currently heading an NGO for Human Rights in Delhi. In the Second Great War, he saw service with his unit on the Burma front as a part of the famous 17 Infantry Division. On 22nd February 1942, Sam was wounded while gallantly leading his company to capture a vital enemy position, when he took the impact of a burst fired from a Japanese machine gun in his stomach and body. He was taken to the "Regimental Aid Post" from where the regimental medical Officer, Captain GM Diwan, evacuated him to the Hospital at Pegu. Here the surgeon who examined him asked him what had happened? Sam told him, "I was kicked by a bloody mule!" Hearing this response, the surgeon laughed and said "Given your sense of humour, it will be worth saving you!" After being operated upon, he was evacuated to Rangoon, from where he sailed for India in one of the last ships to leave that port before it fell to the Japanese. For this act of gallantry he was awarded the "Military Cross." Once discharged from the hospital and reunited with his family after a long separation, Sam was detailed to attend the "8th Staff Course", at the Staff College Quetta (In Pakistan) from 23 August 1943 to 22 December 1943 in the rank of a temporary Major. On completion of the Staff College Course, he was posted as the "Brigade Major", (BM) a critical appointment, to the "Razmak Brigade" in Waziristan close to the North Western Frontier Province, now in Pakistan. He remained in this job from 13 January to 22 October 1944 whereafter he was posted to 9/12 Frontier Force Rifles (FFR) in Burma (now known as Myanmar) who were then on the move astride the Rangoon-Mandalay highway as a part of the victorious 14th Army under General Slim. During the closing days of the war, he went as a staff officer to General Daisey to Indo China, where, after the Japanese surrender, he helped in the rehabilitation of over 10,000 Japanese prisoners of war. He was then posted to the Staff College Quetta as General Staff Officer, Grade -2 (GSO-2). Before he could take up this assignment, he was selected by Field Marshal Lord Claude Auchinlek, the Commander-in-Chief of India to go on a lecture tour to Australia for a period of six months in 1946. The main purpose of this tour was to bring home to the Australians, Indias' war effort and the achievement of its' Armed Forces since it was perceived that this was not too well known in that region! On his return from the Australian lecture tour, he was promoted to the rank of a local Lieutenant Colonel and while continuing to be on the panel of Frontier Force Regiment, he was posted to General Headquarters at New Delhi as General Staff Officer, Grade-1 (GSO-1), Military Operations-3 (MO-3) till then the sole preserve of the British Officers. He was the first Indian posted to the MO Directorate. In December 1946 when the division of assets and regiments between Pakistan and Indian Armies crystallized a little, and it became clear that the Frontier Force Regiment would remain with Pakistan, Sam was empanelled on the panel of 16th Battalion of The Punjab Regiment, and posted as GSO-1, MO-1. Here he served from 1st January 1947 to 21 July 1947. On 15th August 1947, when India became independent, Sam was transferred to the panel of the 5th Royal Gorkha Rifles, (FF) and was posted to command the 3rd Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles. However, before he could proceed to take over this Battalion, Pakistani tribals with the help of Pakistan Army had attacked parts of Kashmir and managed to reach close to Srinagar. Considering the operational situation, his posting to command the Battalion was cancelled and he continued to serve with the MO Directorate as GSO-1 (ops) at Army HQ. It was thus that the future and first Field Marshal of the Indian Army was denied a chance to command a Battalion in the Army! This has always been disappointing for him. At the time of these operations, Sam Manekshaw, the first "Field Marshal" after independence, in the Indian Army, had a ringside view of events. Then a Lieutenant Colonel, he accompanied V P Menon on his historic mission to Kashmir, to get the then ruler of the State of Jammu & Kashmir, Maharaja Hari Singh to sign the "Instrument of Accession" and accede to the Indian Union. Later he was granted the acting rank of a Brigadier and appointed Director, MO (OPS). Sam continued in this assignment till 10th March 1952. During this trying period, Sam had numerous opportunities to interact with Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel who was the Home Minister in the Union Government. The Sardar was constantly in touch with Sam seeking update on the operations in Kashmir Hyderabad and so on and in the process both got to know each other well. In 1948, Sam and Thimayya, then a Major General, were a part of the Indian Delegation to the UN, led by Sir BN Rau, as military advisors. It was here that he first met with Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who was on board the same ship along with her father, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, sailing to Paris. The two Generals, spent nearly three months in Paris where the session was held. In March 1952, Sam was posted to Ferozepur in command of 167 Infantry Brigade. It was his first command assignment after the war. In 1953, he was appointed Colonel of the 8th Gorkha Rifles. Having finished with the command of the brigade, Sam was posted to the Army HQ as "Officiating Director of Military Training" (DMT) from April 1954 to January 1955. In May 1955, Brigadier Sam Manekshaw was posted as Commandant to the Infantry School. He was the first Indian to be posted to that Institution. In November 1956 Sam left for the UK to attend the course at the "Imperial Defence College" (IDC) till December 1957. On completion of this course and his return in December 1957, he was posted to command 26 Infantry Division at Jammu. He took over the Division from Major General PP Kumaramangalam, DSO., who was posted to the Staff College at Wellington as Commandant. It was here, at Jammu, that a life long friendship developed between Sam and Mr DP Dhar, who was then a minister in the State Cabinet of the State of Jammu & Kashmir. It was also here that he had a spat with the then Defence Minister, Mr VK Krishna Menon. After command of the division Sam was posted to the Staff College at Wellington to replace General Kumaramangalam, yet another time! While commanding the Staff College, he was cleared for his next rank. Before he could be promoted, Krishna Menon and General BM Kaul, a Kashmiri Officer with his lineage rooted in the Nehru clan, ordered an inquiry against Sam as the Commandant of the Staff College. Having been exonerated of all charges, Sam was appointed to command 4 Corps after General Kaul resigned in the wake of the Chinese war! General Manekshaw was appointed GOC-in-C Western Command with its' Headquarters at Simla after the tragic death of Gen Daulat Singh in a helicopter crash in Poonch in J&K, in November 1963. He assumed command of Western Command on 4th December 1963, and moved to replace Gen Kumaramangalam in Eastern Command in 1964. On 8th June 1969, Sam took over as the Chief of Army Staff, once again from General Kumaramangalam, where apart from other contributions his finest hour was the surrender of the Pakistan Army in Dacca in 1971. In recognition of his service to the nation, he was created as the first "Field Marshal" in independent India on 1st January 1973.

Virpur near Rajkot Saurashtra. Wife: Virbai. Guru; BhojalRam of Fatehpur. Inspiration. Idol of Sri Rama and Hanuman. There are 100 Jalaram Centers functioning in different parts of the country and over-seas. Today is the 218th birth anniversary of Jalaram Bapa being celebrated all over. Jalaram was saint from Gujarat, born in Virpur in a lohrana family. His parents were, Pradhan Thakkar and Rajbai Thakkar. He was married to Vir Bai Maa. Shree Jalaram Bapa was a devotee of Lord Ram. Jalaram Bapa was however not willing to live household life and continue business of his father. He was mostly engaged in serving pilgrims, sadhus and saints. Jalaram Bapa was inclined to completely withdraw from marital life. Fortunately his wife, Virbaima decided to follow the path of Jalaram. When Jalaram decided to go for a pilgrimage for holy places like Ayodhya, Kasi, Badrinath and several other sacred places. Virbaima followed him. At the age of 18, Jalaram Bapa accepted Shree Bhojal Ram of Fatehpur as Guru and was given a "Guru Malaa and Mantra" in the name of Shree Ram. With blessings of his guru, he started "Sadavrat" a feeding center,at Virpur in 1820, where sadhus, saints as well as the visitors could have food for free. Nobody returned from that place without having food. All this he did single handed with Virbaima assisting him. Soon his fame spread as an incarnation of the divine Lord Rama. Whoever come to Virpur, whether Hindu, Muslim or any Religion was fed by Bapa. This tradition of feeding people continues to this day in Virpur, Gujarat. The center feeds thousands of visitors every day since the year 1820 and is non-stop continued till today. Devotees have offered so much money to this temple in the past, that the temple is no longer taking any more donations since 9th February, 2001. Virpur sub-post master spent a whole day signing money orders in the name of Jalaram bapa. In fact, it is only temple in India to set such a trend to not to take any offerings and donations and continue the feeding to all visitors with love and reverence. At a time when God himself in the guise of an old Saint told Jalaram Bapa to donate his wife Virbaima to serve him, after having deep sight in heart Jalaram Bapa actually donated Virbai Ma. After reaching somewhere in forest a saint asked Virbai Ma to wait for him but he never came, this was followed by an Akashwani stating that it was only to test hospitality of the couple, then God came and gave blessings. He had left a Cane and a Bag, with Virbai Ma, before the saint disappeared and Akashwani followed. This Danda and Jholi are still there at Virpur and are kept in display in a glass enclosure. In modern time, many devotees of Jalaram have experienced that if they pray to Shree Jalaram Bapa from the depth of their heart, he kindly gives his blessings to them and fulfil their wishes. These experiences are known as "Parachas". They pray to Jalaram Bapa, that if their wish is fulfilled they would donate some money or grains or do fasting on Thursday or would send their experience to be printed on Jalaram Jyot - a magazine published from Rajkot. Due to innumerable Parchas, experienced by many persons, the name & fame of Jalaram Bapahas spread all over the world and his Temple can be found in all parts of India as well as overseas. Previously, devotees used to send to money to Jalaram Bapa's main temple at Virpur and flow of money never stopped. However, the Virpur temple has stopped taking any money in cash or cheque since over a decade and is one and only temple in world to do so. Theses "Parachas" are printed in the magazine every month with name & address of devotee, for any can verify it and also the person who sent his experience can come to know that his Paracha has been printed. Even today Jalaram Bapa's birthday, the seventh day of Kartik month is celebrated as Jalaram Jayanti. On this day various groups of Jalaram devotees feed the food as prasad. This happens at a lot of Jalaram temples throughout India & abroad as well. Jalaram Jayanti is observed on the seventh day after Diwali.
